Marsa Football Club News
As Premier League football takes a break due to Malta's World Cup qualifier against Iceland, First Division football took centre stage especially with the direct clash for promotion between Qormi and Marsa. The teams shared the spoils in a goalless draw meaning that Marsa end their league commitments as champions and are promoted to the Premier League after sixteen years in the lower divisions. Qormi are now in a difficult position although they are currently second with 32 points, one point ahead of Lija Athletic. But while Lija still have to play next week against St. Patrick, Qormi have already played all their league matches. After beating Gozo 4-1, Lija are therefore favourites for promotion. A win for Lija would put them in the Premier League while a draw would force a promotion play-off between them and Qormi. The battle for promotion is not the only one as Tarxien Rainbows and St. Andrew's are still fighting to avoid the penultimate position which means relegation to Division 2. Mosta avoided relegation trouble after beating St. Andrew's 6-0 on Saturday. In another game, St. Patrick defeated Zurrieq 7-0. Zurrieq, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, have already been condemned to the Second Division.
