Jeff Fenech
World Bantamweight Champion (IBF) 1985-87Super Bantamweight Champion (WBC) 1987-88World Featherweight Champion (WBC) 1987-1990
They dont come much tougher than Jeff Fenech. Growing up on the backstreets of Marrickville (Sydney, Australia) he led a wild life, many times on the wrong side of the law, he soon straightened out directed his energy into boxing, and went on to become one of the premier fighters in the lower weight divisions.Fenech was born in Sydney on May 28, 1964, He is the son of Maltese immigrants, he was a good amateur boxer, representing Australia at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1994. Later that year he turned professional and won the national super-flyweight title in just his 3rd pro bout. This talented Aussie wasted no time at all and won the IBF bantamweight title in just his seventh pro fight, knocking out Satoshi Shingaki in nine rounds, less than a year after competing in the Olympics. His fierce nature and sound boxing skills made him a force to be reckoned with. He successfully defended his IBF bantam title on three occasions with wins over old foe Shingaki (w ko 3), Jerome Coffee (w pts 15) and Steve McCrory (w ko 14) as well as a 10 round non-title victory over quality Mexican Daniel Zaragoza. Fenech then moved to super-bantam and won the WBC title in May 1987 with a fourth-round knockout of Thai Samart Payakaroon who must have been pretty moved by the whole experience as he quit boxing immediately afterwards to become a Buddhist monk!
. The Logie hosting baton has passed to Shaun Micallef
The lawyer-turned-comedian-turned-actor follows in the televisual footsteps of names such as Bert Newton, Daryl Somers and even on one (not-so-memorable) occasion Ray Martin. The choice to head one of the cheesiest nights on the box is a slight surprise. Micallef, last seen on the ABC in a dramatic turn as Sigrid Thornton's rather wet love interest on SeaChange - is not as commercial a name as his immediate predecessor Andrew Denton.Micallef, whose self-titled comedy show The Micallef Program will go to air again on ABC-TV this year, is expected to continue the recent trend of not taking television's night of nights too seriously. A Logie winner himself (last year for Most Outstanding Comedy Program) he first came to the attention of TV viewers on Channel 7's Full Frontal before venturing into ABC projects. In an interview with Sunday Life today, the Melbourne-based comedian explained his approach to comedy this way. "The comedy I do is very straight," he said. "It relies on foxing the expectation that I'm going to be a newsreader or a barrister. I'm not clowny." "Shaun is original and unpredictable," promises Logies executive producer Hilary Innes. The Logies will be televised on Channel 9 from Melbourne's Crown Complex on April 22. (That's a Sunday if you plan to tune in ... or tune out).
Tellant With Looks
TEXAS was nominated for a Brit award in 2000 for Best British Group, but lost to Travis. "A good song is to me, worth more than a thousand rave reviews in a trendy London magazine," says spiteri."For years I've idolised Ashford and Simpson, Neil Diamond, Dawn Penn, Holland and Dozier, Carole King.....The list stretches on and on. These people weren't moody, hip rock 'n rollers. The fact that Johnny and I were nominated for three Ivor Novello awards after 'White On Blonde' meant so much more to us than all the other acclaim and fuss of that year [1997]. And we got the award that really counts: 'An Outstanding Body Of Work.' 'Say What You Want' and 'Black Eyed Boy' aren't the only good songs we've written." Even after all the success that Texas has had, the band has managed to gounded and focused on their own expectations. Texas should have won that award at the Brits. Their time will come - it has to.
